Biology classes participate in Red Sea expedition correspondence

Sophomore biology students at Blair have recently been corresponding with coral reef researchers aboard a research vessel in the Red Sea as part of an expedition lead by the Living Oceans Foundation. Every day since May 4, the students have submitted a marine biology-related question for the researchers to answer. The expedition, designed to assess the impact of human and ecological change on coral development, will last for six more days.


Blair's It's Academic club competes in Knowledge Master Open

Blair's It's Academic club placed 11th out of 774 teams in the world in the spring 2006 Knowledge Master Open (KMO) competition on April 26. With a score of 1685 out of 2000 points, Blair again fell behind Richard Montgomery High School's team and placed second in the state of Maryland.

Hysen wins SGA election

Junior Eric Hysen has been declared the winner of the SGA presidential election over sophomore Will Bucher, SGA Parliamentarian Christie Lin announced today. Hysen currently serves as SGA chief of staff under President Barun Aryal. Sophomore Molly Martinez was elected vice president.

Blair teams captured the first five spots at today's Envirothon competition, held at the Montgomery County Agricultural History Farm Park in Derwood, Maryland. Team CX, comprising juniors Olivia Buzek, Justin Chow, Jeff Guo, Ben Li and Alex Pei, placed first with a total of 436.5 points out of a possible 500.

The weekend of April 15 marked the 90th anniversary of the Irish uprising against British rule. Thousands gathered outside the General Post Office on Parnell Street in Dublin, Ireland, where the Proclamation of Independence was read to celebrate the anniversary, according to The Irish Times.

Two youths attempted to escape with a stolen black Jeep Cherokee in the Woodmoor area, resulting in a minor car chase that climaxed at the intersection of Colesville Road and University Boulevard today at approximately 4:35 p.m. They were caught soon afterwards.

Blair and the PTSA are working on a plan to allow parents to safely drop off students on the University Blvd. side of the school, a location more convenient for many parents. Currently, the only authorized drop-off point is in the Colesville parking lot, but many parents chose to leave students in the morning in the University Blvd. parking lot, creating dangerous congestion.

Fundraiser to be held for community service projects in El Salvador

The Washington Ethical Society International Partners (WES-IP) will hold a fundraiser for its summer El Salvador service trip on Saturday, April 1 at 7:30 p.m. at 7750 16th Street, Washington, D.C. 20012. The suggested $20 admission fee (children under 12 enter free of charge), along with whatever other money is raised during the event, will go directly towards this summer's service projects.
