Thursday night games premiere this week on NFL Network, which means either more excitement or more frustration for football fans, and earlier deadlines for us. But either way you slice it, it's football.

"Rasheed Rule" is unnecessary straitjacket

Everyone loves David Stern. The NBA's babysitter decides what clothes the athletes wear to games and what ball the players should start using after 35 years of success. What's his latest change? Refs are now whistle-happy when it comes to arguing. Before the season started, Stern discussed with the referee association what his image of NBA players consists of. Accordingly, refs now have an unspoken, zero-tolerance policy for player rants on the court.

As we reviewed the standings this week, we noticed that there was a discrepancy in the number of games we had each picked. Somehow, Pia had two less games than the rest of us. Josh suggested giving her two losses, hoping to even the field. Phil said we should hand her one win and one loss, keeping her totals even. Wondering what to do and where we had gone wrong, we poured over the last ten weeks of predictions, hoping to find a clue as to where we had done some bad math. As fate would have it, we found the mistake. So what did we find? We omitted two of Pia's correct predictions. Her two more wins plus another week of superiority mean she's pulling away fast, as the rest of us are left stunned and embarrassed. As for this week…

Blair ice hockey crushed in opener

By Robert Feasley | Nov. 17, 2006, midnight | In Blair »

NOV. 17, WHEATON INDOOR ICE RINK— The Blair Community ice hockey team is not affiliated or sponsored by the Montgomery Blair High School athletic program or Montgomery County Public Schools. The team is an independent group of Blair students. With high hopes for the 2006-2007 season, the Blair ice hockey team took the ice tonight expecting to flex their offensive muscle against the Magruder Colonels in their season opener. However, the Colonels completely shut down the Blair offense and dominated the Blazer defense, inducing the mercy rule with 2:02 left in the third period with a score of 10-0.

Football ends season with a loss

By Robert Feasley | Nov. 10, 2006, midnight | In Blair »

NOV. 10, Blazer Stadium— Damascus is not as strong a team as it was last year. A junior-entrenched roster, it lacks the overall leadership its state championship team held in such high esteems. This, however, mattered little as they dominated Blair last night in the Blazers' final game of the season, 35-7.

For football: recover and rebuild

By Rachita Sood | Nov. 9, 2006, midnight | In Blair »

Last year, Blair's varsity football team was only one win away from a playoff berth. The Blazers lost to former state champions Damascus in their final game, ending the season at 6-4. This year, the Blazers have won only two games and stand at a dismal 2-7. Riding on last year's success, Blair seemed likely to shine again this season. But the Blazers graduated several key seniors last year and were left with a young nucleus of players, many of whom had little to no varsity-level experience.

Soccer sent home in West semifinal

By Abe Schwadron | Nov. 4, 2006, midnight | In Blair »

The Blair boys' varsity soccer team was hoping to play its way to a State Championship this season. The Blazers wanted a piece of the best teams Maryland has to offer: squads like Magruder, Whitman and Churchill. But Blair was unable to get past one team this year that proved to be the thorn in the Blazers' side. Instead of moving one step closer to school history and state glory, the Blazers fell 3-0 to the Walter Johnson Wildcats in last night's 4A West region semifinal in shocking, heartbreaking fashion.

Blake triumphs over Blair

By Dylan Baird | Nov. 4, 2006, midnight | In Blair »

NOV. 4th, Blake— All year, Blair's JV Football team has been about not giving up and fighting back. They are strong in the trenches, and their run-based offense always seems to come through. However, on Saturday against the Blake Bengals, they just fell short. In a game that started with the Bengals up 22-6 and a half-time score of 22-20, Blair was never out of it until the final minutes. Despite the 38-20 score, they came close to staging a surprising comeback.

Blazers take a bite out of Bengals

By Robert Feasley | Nov. 3, 2006, midnight | In Blair »

NOV. 3, BLAKE— Just two weeks ago, a winless varsity football season seemed inevitable. After losing seven straight games and scoring only 24 points all season, team morale was low, and so were expectations. But in week eight they finally edged out a victory against the un-ranked Einstein Titans. The game was wet, it was cold and it wasn't pretty — but in the end, they came out on top. This week, despite crowds of naysayers, the Blazers won again, trampling the Blake Bengals (1-8) 29-13.

NBA Western conference preview

By Andrew Kung, Nitin Sukumar | Nov. 1, 2006, midnight | In Professional »

Following Phoenix's suit, the West is moving toward a general run-and-gun offense. The teams that can actually do this have a shot at the championship. And once again, that means Dallas, San Antonio and Phoenix. But key additions in Houston and Minnesota have at least two more teams eyeing the trophy in June. Here’s a look at the West, with teams ranked in order of predicted finish within their divisions.

Girls' soccer falls to top-seeded Wootton

By Rachita Sood | Nov. 1, 2006, midnight | In Blair »

From the opening whistle to the very last seconds of Tuesday night's match, the varsity girls' soccer team fought relentlessly against the number one team in the division. They played with heart and skill, showing that despite an 8-8 season, the Blazers are capable of taking on any team in the county.

NFL Week Eight predictions

It's the beginning of the end for Pia. I see it now. Last week was just the beginning as she lost ground. Amazingly, Phil was the best last week, even though as a group we unanimously picked six games wrong. There are a couple of real tough games this week, including Denver versus Indy in a matchup with playoff implications. Abe makes his return to the picks and looks to gain ground from his last-place standing, which is highly unlikely. Check it out for yourself"

Victory at last

By Robert Feasley | Oct. 29, 2006, midnight | In Blair »

OCT. 27, Einstein— Winning always feel good — even when it's cold, wet and muddy — but especially when you've lost seven games in a row. Tonight, the Blazers finally put one in the 'W' category, edging out a victory over the Einstein Titans, 8-6. Saving a win-less season, they improved their record to 1-7.

Girls' soccer triumphs on senior night

By Rachita Sood | Oct. 27, 2006, midnight | In Blair »

When the final whistle pierced the frigid air on Tuesday night, the Blair varsity girls' soccer team rushed to the center of Blazer stadium amid enthusiastic cheers from the crowd, jubilant over their victory. The Blazers (7-7) snapped a three game losing streak with a decisive 5-3 win over Walter Johnson on senior night, Blair's last home game of the regular season.

Blazers bulldoze Titans

By Dylan Baird | Oct. 26, 2006, midnight | In Blair »

OCT. 26, EINSTEIN— It was the first play of the Titans' first drive, when Einstein's quarterback connected for an easy completion. Even before the first play was over, it looked like another tough game for Blair JV football. Suddenly, the ball slipped from the receiver's hands and onto the ground. Sophomore Paris Essoumba scooped it up and smashed straight into the end zone for a quick six points. Before the Einstein fans knew what hit them, Blair was on top, and would stay there for the entire game, for a final score of 0-39.

Blake KOs Field Hockey

By Jon Berger | Oct. 26, 2006, midnight | In Blair »

OCT. 26, BLAKE— After one of its best seasons in recent memory, the Blair field hockey team (4-9) was knocked out of the 4A Regional Playoffs tonight in a tense, 0-2 match against the sixth-seeded Blake Bengals. Although the Blazers played at Blake's level, they could not compete with Blake's superior stickwork and speed and were unable to break through the Bengal defense.

WJ snaps soccer's spectacular streak

By Abe Schwadron | Oct. 25, 2006, midnight | In Blair »

When the Blair boys' soccer team limped off the field Tuesday night following a stunning 1-0 loss to Walter Johnson, the previously undefeated Blazers emitted a mix of emotions. First, there was the anger and frustration at losing a hard-fought battle and ending their undefeated streak. Then, with reflection, came the satisfaction of one of the most spectacular regular seasons in Blair soccer history. And last, the Blazers (11-1) looked toward the future and began to mentally prepare for the postseason.
