HEREFORD HIGH SCHOOL, Nov. 10 β Blair's two top runners, senior Johanna Gretschel and junior Rutvij Pandya, ran well Saturday, finishing 28th in 20:55 and 48th in 18:01 respectively at the Maryland 4A State Meet held at Hereford High School.
Maybe it was the time change or the drop in temperature, but something threw the Redskins' world askew last week, as they barely managed to hold on and trump the New York Jets. On the other side of the NFL, the Patriots conjured up a few touchdowns in the fourth quarter to overcome the Colts and become the sole undefeated team in the league. What will Week 10 bring? Will the NFL's elite and bottom-of-the-barrel continue to widen the gap? Or with the Patriots off this week, is it finally time for some other team to shine? As for our panel of experts, Andrew's streak at the top of the charts has finally been broken by last year's champ Pia, who's looking to reclaim her throne, and the newbie Anshul. This week will hopefully bring some separation among these ranks too.
Blair's first co-ed golf team finished the 2007 season fourth in the Kohut Division, one of two divisions in Montgomery County. With a 9-8 record and an average of 253 strokes, the squad placed 20th out of 25 teams in the county.
WATKINS MILL, Nov. 1 In a race without many surprises, the girls' cross country team placed 11th while the boys placed 10th out of 12 teams at the regional race held at Watkins Mill High School on Nov. 1.
After a 5-7 season last year, the girls' tennis team was anxious to keep their Division I berth this fall. The Blazers met their goal, finishing 7-5 with wins against division rivals Richard Montgomery and Magruder and losses only to Division I powerhouses such as Churchill, Whitman and Walter Johnson, and hoped to be in the top five of the county playoffs.
BLAKE, Nov. 2 The varsity girls' volleyball team traveled to Blake for their first, and ultimately last, playoff game of the season on Friday, losing in an upsetting 3-0 match. The Bengals triumphed by scores of 25-11, 25-17 and 25-19, with a superior defense and precise, hard spikes. The loss ended Blair's season with a record of 7-8.
As expected, the Redskins were absolutely annihilated by the Patriots last week, but somehow three of our experts got that game wrong. New England was clearly the better team, but was running up the score like that really necessary? Maybe Bill Belichick is a Tom Brady owner in his fantasy football league... The news this week of course comes from the RCA Dome, where the Pats will take on the Colts in the battle of the two remaining undefeateds. It's Brady versus Peyton in a matchup we saw last January and will most likely see again come playoff time this year. Could this be the most anticipated regular season game in recent memory? Well, it looks to be a lot more exciting than Redskins-Jets, that's for sure.
After the U.S. Open every year, tennis begins a twilight period on the fast, indoor courts. With no Grand Slams remaining, most top players are either mentally or physically unavailable for tournaments. It's a time when players like David Nalbandian and Tatiana Golovin can sweep events and boost their rankings.
BLAZER STADIUM, Oct. 26 - Despite playing in tough conditions on a soaking-wet field, the Blair girls' varsity soccer team pulled out a 3β0 victory against Northwest in the first round of the Montgomery County playoffs on Thursday, Oct. 25.
We close in on the season's halfway point with an exciting matchup for Washington fans, as our Redskins travel to Foxboro to take on the seemingly-invincible New England Patriots. Even the most optimistic fans have tempered their expectations, but hey, here's hoping for a miracle. As for our gurus, Andrew has again resumed his place atop the standings after a 12-2 week. However, his leads have been short-lived so far this year - who will step up this week?
Blair's varsity football team hosted the Kennedy Cavaliers for the homecoming game on Friday despite the elements. Although the game was evenly matched for most of the night, Blair (0-8) was unable to make up for long Kennedy plays as the Blazers lost, 18-0.
The offense of the Blair's varsity boys' soccer team finally clicked on Tuesday, giving the Blazers their first home win of the season, a 3-1 victory over Northwood on senior night.
In the girls' varsity volleyball team's last home game on Tuesday night, the Poolesville Falcons soundly defeated the Blazers (6-7) in a disheartening 3-0 game. The still-undefeated Falcons dominated the court with superior technique and solid, hard serves while the Blazers slipped up in their game and made careless mistakes, resulting in set scores of 25-11, 25-13 and 25-9.
Blair varsity boys finish off their soccer season tomorrow night against Northwood. The match-up is the first varsity soccer contest between the schools since Northwood reopened in 2004, and even though neither team will be making a run for the state championship this year, the game has been circled on calendars since the schedule was distributed during the summer.
Are juniors somehow inherently superior at NFL picks? After lurking in the shadows with solid performance all season, Anshul has finally snuck into the lead six weeks in as the seniors, defending champ Pia included, lag behind. Well at least we're in charge of his class grade... Anyway if you haven't already noticed, those guys from New England are pretty good. Is 16-0 possible? Not for the Redskins, who fell to the Packers in a close one. A more favorable matchup is on tap this Sunday, though. Lucky week seven here we come.
The Damascus Hornets triumphed over the girls' varsity volleyball team, winning straight sets β 25-15, 25-18 and 25-23 to bring Blair's record to 6-6. Although the Blazers initiated vigorous rallies and competed fiercely, they were overcome by the Hornets' good teamwork and powerful offense as well as their own unforced errors.
Blair varsity football dropped their seventh game in a row after a tight loss on Friday at home to Wootton, 19-6. The Blazers stayed close, going into the fourth quarter down only 6-0, but a much-needed offensive spark came too late as the Patriots commanded the last 12 minutes of the game.
BLAZER FIELD, Oct. 18- The night started off with enthusiastic cheers from players and parents of both teams, applauding the seniors for their efforts and contributions at their last home game. Music and drums echoed through the night. With raised spirits, the Blazers took charge of the game early on, and wrapped up their home season with a 4-0 finish over Einstein, bringing their record to 5-5-1.
BLAZER FIELD, Oct. 18- As the final whistle of the game pierced the air, Blair's JV field hockey team victoriously jogged off the field at their last home game of the season after crushing the Einstein Titans 6-0. This win finished the Blazer's season with an outstanding record of 7-2-2.
BLAZER STADIUM, Oct. 17 - Coming off of a devastating defeat to Walter Johnson, the Blazers took out their frustration on the Sherwood Warriors, displaying their defensive strength in a 4-0 victory. Despite the fact that Sherwood's violent style of play mixed well with the referee's lenience towards aggressive play, the Blazers managed to keep to their game plan and come away with the victory.
Despite a close game and a solid defensive effort, Blair's varsity boys' soccer team fell 1-0 to the Walter Johnson Wildcats. The team falls to 2-6-1 on the season after the loss. Both teams played dominant defense and kept possession of the ball equally. However, Blair's inability to capitalize on set pieces or defend them ultimately gave the Wildcats a win.
New England at Dallas is the game to watch here in Week Six, although our Redskins are looking good, picking up another win last week by holding the vaunted Detroit offense to a single field goal. A win at Lambeau this week will surely bring about the inevitable, misguided Super Bowl rumblings. Meanwhile, our analysts are once more engaged in a three-way tie after Pia impressed last week by going 12-2, while Andrew took a tumble and saw his lead evaporate. Anshul has been steady all year to claim his share of first place, but Nitin continues to lag behind. Will Week Six bring the fix? Sorry, that was really bad. Here goes... Standings:
| Last week | Season total | |
| Andrew | 6-8 | 46-30 |
| Anshul | 11-3 | 46-30 |
| Pia | 12-2 | 46-30 | Nitin | 8-6 | 42-34 |
Blair girls' varsity volleyball (6-5) faced the Magruder Colonels on Friday in a laborious game that resulted in a 3-0 loss for the Blazers. Although the Blazers fought hard, displaying some of the best teamwork so far this season, the still-undefeated Colonels cruised through the three-set game with scores of 25-14, 25-20 and 25-15.
BLAZER STADIUM, Oct. 9- Varsity girls' soccer conquered the Gaithersburg Trojans on Tuesday October 9, in an epic battle, where their depth and versatility on the field prevailed over the Trojans. The girls, coming off of a depressing victory to the Wootton, again demonstrated the depth and hustle that has kept brought them a winning record.
Coming off of a victorious high after their dominant win over Wheaton last week, the junior varsity field hockey team faced the reality of a much stronger Paint Branch defense. Overcoming disorganization and miscommunication, the Blazers conquered the Panthers 2-0 and lifted their record to 5-2-1.
