Blazers take home two state track titles

Junior Thierry Siewe Yanga won the Maryland boys' 4A 800 meter race with a time of 1:55.22 at the Maryland Track and Field State Championships at Morgan State University in Baltimore on Saturday, May 28. The day before, Friday, May 27, he also led the boys' 4x800 meter relay team, along with seniors Ben Geertsema and Alexander Mangiafico and junior Dominic Massimino, to win the state championship with a time of 7:58.58.


Blair softball loses high-scoring state semifinal

The Blair Blazers (16-5) and the Chopticon Braves (20-4) battled each other for six innings, but the seventh inning saw 14 total runs scored and ended when Chopticon's bats came alive and brought the winning run across.


MoCo running back enrolls early to UMD

After setting records and winning the Maryland 3A state championship for the Damascus Swarmin' Hornets this past fall sports season, local running back Jake Funk is poised to make an impact at the college level. The former high schooler enrolled early for the spring semester at the University of Maryland, where he committed in October.


Blair varsity baseball wins extra inning thriller

The Blair Blazers (10-7) beat the Clarksburg Coyotes (10-6) 3-2 in extra innings on Monday night after an extended absence from the field due to heavy rain. Strong pitching by both teams coupled with good infield play kept the score low despite the game lasting eleven innings. Clarksburg's numerous errors and walks in the final inning gave the Blazers the opportunity to take home a win on senior night.


Blair boys lacrosse beats Springbrook in sudden death overtime

The Blair Blazers (5-6) beat the Springbrook Blue Devils (5-6) 10-9 with nine seconds left in the first overtime period on senior night Tuesday. The first half of the game was played on Monday and a rain delay caused it to be postponed until Tuesday.

Blair varsity baseball (6-5) lost to the Walter Johnson Wildcats (10-2) in a close game by a score of 4-2. After allowing two runs in the top of the ninth inning, the Blazers were unable to bounce back.

The Blazers started the game quickly against the Walter Johnson Wildcats and never let up. Strong batting and a no-hitter by senior pitcher Karylena Cruz held the Blazers coast their way to a resounding 19-0 victory.

Despite a strong start and consistent efforts throughout the game, the Blair boys' lacrosse team (0-5) was not able to fight off Magruder (2-4). The Blazers led early on, but as the game continued, they had no answer to the Colonels' continued offense, and lost 12-10.


Blair Softball rallies to beat Paint Branch Panthers

The Blair softball team (3-0) took on the Paint Branch Panthers (1-2) on Friday night. Though the Blazers faltered early against the aggressive hitting of the Panthers, the team was able to mount a stunning comeback to win the game 12-8.

Boys' basketball mounts playoff comeback to advance

The Blair boys' basketball team (13-9) beat the Richard Montgomery Rockets (18-4) in stunning fashion to advance to the next round of the playoffs. The Blazers had a strong showing in the second half to beat the top seeded Rockets. Although Blair got off to a slow start, crucial big-man play from twins Julius and Jordan Cobb contributed to Blair's late success.

The Blair Blazers (12-9) beat the Churchill Bulldogs (11-11) Friday by a score of 60-41. Blair struggled against Churchill the first time they played, winning by only four points, but in this matchup the Blazers' strong defensive play, comprehensive scouting report, and dominance in the low post bolstered them to a victory.

On Friday night in the first round of the playoffs, the stakes and intensity were high for the Blazers. Their convincing win over Walter Johnson earlier in the season had been long forgotten. Blair, having come off an emotional loss earlier in the week, was determined to make sure they wouldn't lose at home again.


Girls' basketball falls to Churchill on senior night

The girls' basketball team (11-11) suffered an emotional 56-40 loss to the Churchill Bulldogs on Monday night. While they were unable to pull out a win in front of a rousing crowd on their senior night, the Blazers battled back from an early deficit and kept the game close until the closing minutes. Senior guard Camille Estrin scored 19 points, including a couple deep threes to lead the way offensively for the Blazers.

As the clock wound down, a frustrated Blair varsity girls' basketball team had been worn down by a short-benched, but taller Kennedy team. The Blazers lost 40-31 in a long game marred by turnovers from both sides as the Cavaliers pulled away late in the third quarter to grab the win on Tuesday night.

The Montgomery Blair varsity girls' basketball team lost 55-28 against the tall and physical Paint Branch Panthers. After getting off to a poor start, the Blazers were not able to come back against the Panthers' overpowering style of play.

The Blair Blazers (9-8) lost Thursday to the Springbrook Blue Devils (5-10) 53-54. Blair went up early in the first half, but the Blue Devils fought back and grabbed the lead in the fourth quarter. A late comeback attempt by Blair brought the game within a point, but were unable to pull out the victory.


Girls' basketball trounces Northwood 68-28

The Montgomery Blair Blazers (7-6) girls' basketball team used superior ball movement and a blanketing full court press to take down the Northwood Gladiators 68-28. Blair put it out of reach in the second quarter when they scored 18 points and shut out Northwood.

The Blair Blazers (6-5) team lost 59-54 to the Magruder Colonels (5-5) on Tuesday, January 11th in the Blair gymnasium. After getting behind early, the Blazers fought to come back and closed the gap to five points in the fourth quarter.



Blair falls on last second shot from Einstein

As time expired, the buzzer beating shot from the Einstein Titans guard banked off the backboard and sunk through the net. The Blair Blazers were handed their first loss of the young season, 51-49, in a game in which Blair was set back by missed open jumpers, layups and free throws. Despite controlling the ball and playing strong defense throughout the game, the Blazers lack of offense led to the loss on Tuesday night.
