Blazers fall to Bengals in first round of playoffs

BLAKE, Nov. 2 The varsity girls' volleyball team traveled to Blake for their first, and ultimately last, playoff game of the season on Friday, losing in an upsetting 3-0 match. The Bengals triumphed by scores of 25-11, 25-17 and 25-19, with a superior defense and precise, hard spikes. The loss ended Blair's season with a record of 7-8.


Unlucky draw concludes girls' tennis

After a 5-7 season last year, the girls' tennis team was anxious to keep their Division I berth this fall. The Blazers met their goal, finishing 7-5 with wins against division rivals Richard Montgomery and Magruder and losses only to Division I powerhouses such as Churchill, Whitman and Walter Johnson, and hoped to be in the top five of the county playoffs.

BLAZER STADIUM, Oct. 26 - Despite playing in tough conditions on a soaking-wet field, the Blair girls' varsity soccer team pulled out a 3–0 victory against Northwest in the first round of the Montgomery County playoffs on Thursday, Oct. 25.


Football falls in rainy Homecoming

Blair's varsity football team hosted the Kennedy Cavaliers for the homecoming game on Friday despite the elements. Although the game was evenly matched for most of the night, Blair (0-8) was unable to make up for long Kennedy plays as the Blazers lost, 18-0.

In the girls' varsity volleyball team's last home game on Tuesday night, the Poolesville Falcons soundly defeated the Blazers (6-7) in a disheartening 3-0 game. The still-undefeated Falcons dominated the court with superior technique and solid, hard serves while the Blazers slipped up in their game and made careless mistakes, resulting in set scores of 25-11, 25-13 and 25-9.


Blazers find first home win on senior night

The offense of the Blair's varsity boys' soccer team finally clicked on Tuesday, giving the Blazers their first home win of the season, a 3-1 victory over Northwood on senior night.

Blair varsity boys finish off their soccer season tomorrow night against Northwood. The match-up is the first varsity soccer contest between the schools since Northwood reopened in 2004, and even though neither team will be making a run for the state championship this year, the game has been circled on calendars since the schedule was distributed during the summer.

The Damascus Hornets triumphed over the girls' varsity volleyball team, winning straight sets – 25-15, 25-18 and 25-23 to bring Blair's record to 6-6. Although the Blazers initiated vigorous rallies and competed fiercely, they were overcome by the Hornets' good teamwork and powerful offense as well as their own unforced errors.


Patriots win rainy battle against Blair

Blair varsity football dropped their seventh game in a row after a tight loss on Friday at home to Wootton, 19-6. The Blazers stayed close, going into the fourth quarter down only 6-0, but a much-needed offensive spark came too late as the Patriots commanded the last 12 minutes of the game.

BLAZER FIELD, Oct. 18- The night started off with enthusiastic cheers from players and parents of both teams, applauding the seniors for their efforts and contributions at their last home game. Music and drums echoed through the night. With raised spirits, the Blazers took charge of the game early on, and wrapped up their home season with a 4-0 finish over Einstein, bringing their record to 5-5-1.

BLAZER STADIUM, Oct. 17 - Coming off of a devastating defeat to Walter Johnson, the Blazers took out their frustration on the Sherwood Warriors, displaying their defensive strength in a 4-0 victory. Despite the fact that Sherwood's violent style of play mixed well with the referee's lenience towards aggressive play, the Blazers managed to keep to their game plan and come away with the victory.


Boys' varsity soccer yet to find first home win

Despite a close game and a solid defensive effort, Blair's varsity boys' soccer team fell 1-0 to the Walter Johnson Wildcats. The team falls to 2-6-1 on the season after the loss. Both teams played dominant defense and kept possession of the ball equally. However, Blair's inability to capitalize on set pieces or defend them ultimately gave the Wildcats a win.


Colonels conquer girls' volleyball

Blair girls' varsity volleyball (6-5) faced the Magruder Colonels on Friday in a laborious game that resulted in a 3-0 loss for the Blazers. Although the Blazers fought hard, displaying some of the best teamwork so far this season, the still-undefeated Colonels cruised through the three-set game with scores of 25-14, 25-20 and 25-15.

Blair varsity girls' volleyball defeated the Whitman Vikings in straight sets on Thursday, bringing their record 6-3. The Blazers easily won the first set 25-10 and the second 25-20, but began to fall short during a suspenseful final set before ultimately prevailing 27-25.


Seniors wave a teary goodbye

In the emotional last home game for seniors on the girls' tennis team, the Blazers fell in a disappointing 7-0 shutout against the Churchill Bulldogs. The Bulldogs dominated with superior technical ability, but the Blazers stood their ground and fought back in a great change of game attitude from previous games, according to Coach David Ngbea.

A member of Blair's Pom Squad, Ross, tripping over loaded utensils and swerving between globs of jelly, is leading a PB&J sandwich-making marathon to raise money for the upcoming year.

CANDY CANE PARK, Oct. 2 - The Lady Blazers came away with a narrow victory against Bethesda Chevy Chase High School with a score of 27-28 on Tuesday, but the boys suffered a whopping defeat of 15-48. Despite the loss, most of the team set personal records on the flat and fast course.

BLAZER FIELD, OCT. 3- The Blazer's home field advantage paid off once more as Blair's varsity field hockey team defeated Wheaton in their third home game, bringing their record to 3-3-1. Playing with consistency, the Blazers attacked Wheaton's goalie circle throughout the game which earned them the 5-0 win.


Girls' volleyball punishes Gladiators

The girls' varsity volleyball team pummeled the Northwood Gladiators in three straight sets on Friday in a quick game that boosted their season record to 4-3. The Blazers dominated in the first and second sets with strong finishes of 25-18 and 25-14 respectively, but slipped in the third for a lengthy set that eventually ended with a 31-29 win.
